Good Shepherd Episcopal
Lookout Mountain
OPUS 8 (Main Organ)
OPUS 9 (Chancel Organ)
Opus 9, a 2-manual and 12-rank pipe organ was completed in July of 2007 for what is the Chancel organ and the Chancel Division of Opus 8. Opus 8 was completed in February of 2008. Cumulatively Opus 8 and 9 make-up the new 49 rank organ(s) for Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) atop Lookout Mountain, TN. From its inception, the new organ was to replace a poorly designed 34-rank pipe organ installed in 1962.

Opus 9 Chancel Organ
As planning and budget discussions progressed, the committee stepped out to consider the possibilities of an Antiphonal Division for the main Gallery organ and realized the potential of a small 2-manual organ. At that point Opus 9 became a reality. The needs for Opus 9 range from chamber concerts, choir accompaniment, and small church services. The early design of the Antiphonal organ was expanded to fulfill a complete 2-manual specification. This option also provided a convenient bridge to the building and completion of Opus 8 for the Gallery.
Contracts for both organs were signed in late 2006, and work began on Opus 9. Installation started in early 2007 and was completed in July 2007. Opus 9 then served the parish as the main organ during the period the Gallery organ was being replaced. Installation of the Gallery organ (Opus 8) started in December of 2007, and tonal finishing was completed in March 2008.

Opus 9 Chancel Organ
Opus 9, the Chancel organ was debuted to the music community of Chattanooga, TN with the Chamber Orchestra of Tennessee on October 28, 2007. Opus 8 was used for its first service on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008. The two organs were dedicated by Trudy Faber, of Wittenberg University on October 19, 2008.
The main Gallery organ is a 3-manual 37-rank organ featuring a Great Division of American basis. The Swell Division was centers on the design of French organbuilding while the Choir Division is embraces the English and French Choir organ. The Chancel organ features scaling and voicing more common to German organs of the 1700s. Though each Division has its own character, the specification and pipe scales were carefully selected to blend and commingle in harmony as a full instrument. The organ offers a wide variety of tonal color with clarity and commanding presence for congregational singing.
Mr. John Wigal, Choirmaster/Organist of Church of the Good Shepherd, served as consultant for the project. A compact disc recording is available upon request.
