St. Mark United Methodist Church
Atlanta, Georgia (Sanctuary Organ)
Æolian-Skinner - 3M/50R
The Aeolian-Skinner was installed in 1970 and the original specification is a direct reflection of the tonal philosophies of that period in organ building history. While well constructed, the organ was centered on thin scales and voicing. During the mid 1990's St. Mark Church enjoyed a major resurgence in its membership. By that time, the organ console and relays were failing and ultimately the console capture shorted out during the opening hymn one Sunday in 1997.
After the console failure, the church made the decision to bring the console up to current day standards. With console renovation, provisions for several tonal changes and enhancements were included for better congregational signing support.
In 1998 our firm rebuilt the present Aeolian-Skinner console with new solid state switching and capture systems. At that time an overhaul of the tonal specification was prepared for.
As of 2000, the first round of tonal revisions were completed. This included a new Swell 4' Principal, 2 2/3 Nazard, 1 3/5 Tierce, 16 Rohrgedeckt and new 16' Fagot (this replaced the existing 16 Krummhorn). The Krummhorn was repitched to 8' and moved to the Positiv Division. The Pedal Division received a new 32' Untersatz, and 32' Contra Posaune. The Great principal Chorus was revoiced and the remaining organ was balanced and regulated.
In 2001, as the Chapel was planned for preparations for the new Parkey Opus 4, the current Chapel organ became the donor for the new 8' Vox Humana for the Swell Division.
2002 saw the completion of the new Trompette En Chamade mounted on the rear window of the sanctuary. This trumpet stop has received much notoriety among organist in the city. It is a commanding sound with good presence without be abrasive to listen to. The new reed was built with polished Brass resonators with flared bell ends. It is voiced on 7 1/2 inches of wind pressure and uses our firm's custom scale and shallot schedule.
